What is World Mission Sunday?

World Mission Sunday is one Sunday in the year when the entire global Church comes together to support the mission of Christ and his church. Donations taken during these worldwide Masses go to support churches, hospitals, schools and vocations in countries where the Church is new, young or poor.

World Mission Sunday is About Solidarity

World Mission Sunday – often celebrated during all the Sundays of October – is essentially a powerful reminder that al of us have a role in the missionary activity of the Church. On this special day, every Catholic community in every country around the world stands in solidarity as “a sign of the unity of faith, love and justice, that unites al the faithful and al the particular Churches in the world, in communion with the universal Church” (PMS Statute, Art. 67).

World Mission Sunday Contributes to the Pontifical Mission Societies Solidarity Fund

The Pontifical Societies for the Propagation of the Faith, Holy Childhood and St Peter the Apostle set up a solidarity fund that supports the church’s mission of evangelisation, around the world, particularly in young churches or in poorer dioceses that find themselves in need. The Pontifical Mission Societies are not funding agencies, or Non-Profit Organisations. We are a worldwide network of prayer, formation and charity, present in every local church.

World Mission Sunday – Go and Invite Everyone to the Banquet (Matthew 22:09)

Pope Francis’ message for World Mission Sunday 2024, themed “Go and Invite Everyone to the Banquet,” emphasizes the Church’s call to share the joy of the Gospel with al people, without exclusion. He highlights the inclusive nature of God’s love and invites every Christian to take part in the missionary work by reaching out to the marginalized and those who feel distant from the Church. The Pope encourages active participation in evangelization through prayer, charity, and witnessing to the faith, underscoring the universal call to share God’s love with the world.
